Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
