No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
